In 2019, when we began our work in East Baltimore, several community members challenged us, and asked, "How can we be safe if we don't have adequate transportation and security?" Community members complained that their children and elders often had to pass through gauntlets of corner drug dealers or navigate unsafe conditions in dangerous territories in their neighborhoods.
Others complained about the city's notoriously erratic, costly (for low-income people), and poorly designed bus, subway, and light rail services. Worse still, the city's free bus (called the Charm City Circulator) is largely restricted to tourist or gentrified areas and does not serve the poorest areas or blocks of the city for the low-income residents who need free or affordable transportation the most.
We listened to community members' need for safe, secure passage in the city. We hire drivers and invest in transportation and security services to help low-income enrollees get safely from school, work, medical treatment facilities, and our program sites to home.
We also hire and train (if need be) security professionals that accompany community members (like domestic violence survivors) on trips in which they need a witness or in which that may be exposed to harm.
Our Safety Specialists for transportation and security are a vital part of our mission to uplift peace and nonviolence in the lives of the beloved people enrolled in our programming.
