Rachel Strodel

Banneker Fellow for Healing Arts

Rachel Strodel (any pronouns) is an artist, physician, farmer, and street medic.

After moving to Baltimore for medical school in 2019, they became a member of BRACE (Baltimore Redevelopment Action Coalition for Empowerment), a community-led organization fighting for housing and food justice in East Baltimore neighborhoods impacted by forced displacement. BRACE’s emphasis on grassroots, neighborhood-level organizing rooted in love has profoundly shaped Rachel’s understanding of community healing.

Rachel graduated from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 2023 and completed a year of Family and Community Medicine Residency at the University of Maryland in 2023-2024. Rachel also earned an undergraduate degree in Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology from Yale University.

They aspire to complete their medical training in Preventive Medicine.

Since middle school, Rachel has been a passionate painter, illustrator, and printmaker, creating art that sparks liberatory action and imagination. Their work explores themes of ancestral healing, interspecies collaboration, and collective grief.

In their free time, Rachel loves to garden, cook for her loved ones, and ride her bike.
